An order item can be exported as a DXF drawing for CAD. The DXF is drawn by the same code that paints
the item on the designer canvas, so it always matches what you see on screen.

What the DXF contains

  • Two views side by side, each with a title: the outside view and the inside view.
  • True size in the item’s unit: inches for imperial items, millimetres for metric items (the file is
marked as millimetres, so CAD opens it at the right scale). Texts have the size the designer gives them on
screen, so they sit in the room the drawing leaves for them; on a plot scaled to fit a page they are small
(scale the Dimensions and Labels layers in CAD if you need them bigger).
  • Every line and text is in colour 7 (black on a white background, white on a black one), not the
    screen’s material colours.
  • Dimensions on the view that matches your company’s default view, on their own layer.
  • One layer for every level of the model, so you can switch parts of the drawing on and off:
Overall, Facet, Frame, Sash Type, Sash Leaves, Glass, Glazing Beads, DLO, Bkgrd Opening, Divider, Coupler,
Mullion, Sash Mullion, DS Interlock, SS Interlock, Meet Rail, Folding, Level 37, Level 38, Astragal, Opening,
    Sub-Facet, Sub Sash Type
(and the same levels with a Sub prefix inside a sub-facet), plus Grids, Spokes, Dimensions, Labels
and Other. Openings and background openings have their own layers.
  • Pictures are not part of the DXF: shape images, notch pictures and cross-section pictures are not
drawn (only the lines of the design are).

Where to get it

  • Order screen → Export DXF (desktop): the DXF is rebuilt from the saved item on the server
and written to the file you choose. It is not stored with the item: the item’s stored DXF stays as
it was. There is no separate Rebuild button.
  • Web designer → Download DXF: the DXF is built fresh when you click.
  • The server builds at most two DXFs at a time; when it is busy you get DXF export is busy, try
    again
    .
  • Saving an item on the web or on the server does not build a DXF, and neither does a recalculation
(Recalculate order, NFRC, global change); only an explicit save from the desktop item designer builds and
    stores it.

Because the DXF is built on demand, an old item needs no re-save: Export DXF always gives the current
drawing.

DXF of a cross-section sheet

On the web designer’s Sheets tab, Download DXF gives a saved sheet page as a DXF. It is built
on demand from the page as it was saved (save the page first; the button waits until it is), and
nothing is stored with the sheet. If the item changed after the page was saved (a new size, series or option), the download is refused with “The item changed since this page was saved; open the page and save it again”, so the DXF always matches the saved sheet; pages saved before this check cannot be compared and are not refused. The file is in paper millimetres at the sheet’s scale (1:4 sheet, 1:4
drawing), laid out like the printed page, so it plots 1:1 on the sheet’s paper size. It contains:

  • On the Sheet layer: the paper, the drawing area, the key box and one box per detail.
  • The key elevation (not to scale), drawn by the designer’s painter in the same place, size and face
as the key picture on the page, on the model’s level layers, with the page’s cut lines and letters on
the Cuts layer and “NTS” under it.
  • Each detail with its caption and its dimension lines (Labels and Dimensions layers). A section is
drawn from the profile’s confirmed CAD section when its picture was made from one (exact outline, on
the part’s level layer); otherwise as a labelled box: the picture’s rectangle with the part’s stock
code. A part’s own DXF image is used only when its size matches the picture. Until a series has confirmed
CAD sections, its sections come out as labelled boxes.
  • Pictures themselves are not in the DXF.
