Two steps: an option rule asks the question on the item, and a test on each dependent
rule checks the answer. The option and its answers are created in Options &
choices
; the rule makes the series ask it.

Step 1 — ask the question

To ask “Glazing Type” once for the whole 3501 unit, the rule offers option GLAZING TYPE on the
whole unit, at Overall, always, starting from the answer Standard.

Field 3501 (269), rule 50
Level / Position Overall / Unit
Rule Type Option Choice
Value 1 option GLAZING TYPE (answers Standard, Dry Glaze, Heel Bead, Site Glaze, Partial
Site Glaze)
Value 2 Standard — the default answer
Has Test / Allowed Answer off / off
Value 2 is the default answerFor an Option Choice rule, the
answer in Value 2 is used when there is no customer or company default and the design has no answer yet. The
editor just calls it “Value 2”. For Option Auto the Value 2 answer is set without asking: 3501
rule 7 sets option SERIES to 3501.

Allowed Answer with its answer list limits which answers are offered; Answer Is Matrix takes the
answer list from a matrix. Use Level Overall for unit-wide questions and a sash level for per-sash questions.

Step 2 — test the answer on the dependent rule

A question that only appears for one answer. To ask “Site Glaze SU” only when the glass is
partly site-glazed, 3501 rule 51 (Option Choice, option 128) has the test Shape/M Option GLAZING TYPE =
Partial Site Glaze.

A part that only appears for one answer. To charge the extra time for heel beading, the rule adds labour
part Glaze14 (Heel Bead Additional time) on all sides of the beads, at All Glazing Beads, when Glazing Type is
Heel Bead.

Field 3501 Sash GB (344), rule 115
Level / Position All Glazing Beads / All Sides
Rule Type / Value 1 Part / Glaze14 (part 61950, labour)
Quantity Type Expression; Quantity Expression (imperial)
(((W+H)/6))*(12+8)
Test Shape/M Option GLAZING TYPE = Heel Bead

Series 344 is a sub-routine called from 3501 by Rule Segment rules, so its tests read the 3501 answers.

Adding the test

  1. On the dependent rule, tick Has Test. The Rule Tests panel opens below.
  2. In the Tests list click New.
  3. Test On: Shape/M Option (the answer on this piece or the pieces above it) or Global Option
(the answer for the whole item). The choices offered depend on the rule’s Level.
  4. In Value(s), pick the option and the Answer, click + to add it to the list. Add more answers
the same way; any of them matches.
  5. Tick Is Not to turn it round (“every colour except White”, as in 361 rules 196–198).
  6. For a second test, set Next Test and And or Or under Linkage; use ( and
) to bracket groups. Click Save on the test, then Save on the rule.
New answers are not covered automaticallyA test lists its answers
one by one. When you add a new answer to an option, every rule that should also fire for it needs the answer added
to its test.
