How Can We Help?
A cross-section sheet is a printable page for one item, laid out like a drawing set: a small
key elevation of the item (not to scale) with the cut lines and their letters — only the lines of the
sections on that page, so a section moved to another page (or removed) takes its line with it; a section whose
cut no longer crosses the design (after a resize, say) is removed with its cut when the page opens, with a
notice — and one
detail per cut — “Vertical Section A-A”, “Horizontal Section B-B” — at one true scale for the
page (1:1 up to 1:10). You make it on the web designer and print it with the order’s documents. Sheets are
stored with the item and follow it: a copied or split line, or a template item added to the cart, starts
with the same sheets.
company preferences. Cut A is placed; cut B’s detail follows the pointer with its target cross.
Preferences: the paper and the drawing area
The report Cross-section sheets is your company’s frame (border and title block). Six company
preferences (Company Preferences → Quoting & order entry) say where its drawing area is, so the page on
screen and the print match exactly:
- Cross-section sheet: paper — Letter, Legal, Tabloid, A4 or A3 (default Letter) and
landscape (default on); - drawing area left / top — distance from the paper’s left and top edge;
- drawing area width / height — size of the area; 0 means “the paper less 10 mm all round”.
The four area values are in the company’s unit: millimetres for a metric company, inches
otherwise. The defaults (0.5 / 0.5 in, 10 × 6.25 in on Letter landscape) match the report that ships
with OpenJanela. If you change the report, set these to its picture box, or the print is no longer
true scale. An area that does not fit the paper shows a message on the page instead of the page.
Cross-section sheet: inches and mm adds millimetres in brackets to every dimension.
The cross-section preference itself must be on, as described in
Drawing a cross-section on a design.
Making a sheet
The Cross-section sheets tab appears next to the other tabs only when the cross-section
preference is on, and only in the full designer.
- + Page opens a new page. The page you were on is saved automatically first (no Save or
Cancel question); a page with sections still outlined red stays open until you move them. A section you are
still placing moves with you and is placed again on the new page. The page strip at the top lists the saved
pages with a thumbnail; click one to open it. - Press V (vertical cut) or H (horizontal cut), then click twice on the key
elevation: above and below the part you want for V, left and right for H. The cut gets the next
letter (A, B, C …). A letter is never given twice on an item, even after its cut is removed. - The cut’s detail now follows the pointer, with a target cross at its top-left corner:
green where it may be placed, red over the key, over another section or past the edge of
the drawing area. Click to place it (it snaps to 5 mm). Esc removes the cut again. - Drag a placed detail to move it; it never stays where the cross is red. Select one and press
Delete to remove the detail and its cut. Drag the key by its frame, or its corner handle to
resize it. - A page has one scale. The first detail on a new page picks the largest scale at which it fits.
Change it with the Scale selector; details that no longer fit turn red and Save waits
until you move them or pick another scale. - Save stores the page; × deletes it (its cuts stay on the item).
In each detail the long empty stretch along the cut (the glass) is shortened to a short gap (no break
lines), so head and sill, or both jambs, sit close together. The level dimensions (rough opening, frame,
sash daylight opening, glass) are drawn close beside the sections, 3 mm apart, with a short label along the
line — RO, FR, FR DLO, SA DLO, GL (TIP and OP when a tip or opening size is shown); the sash Tip and sash Main
lines are left off the details.
Auto: every cross-section in one click
Auto (next to + Page) makes the cross-sections for you:
- It puts one vertical cut in the middle of every column and one horizontal cut in the middle of
every row. Columns run between the frame’s outside edges and the centre lines of the couplers, mullions and
sash interlocks; a mullion in one row only (say a split in the bottom row) makes a column of its own, so every
column of every row gets a cut. A cut therefore never runs along a mullion or coupler. No two cuts are the
same: two vertical (or two horizontal) cuts that cross the same profiles and the same glass count once, and
the first (leftmost or topmost) is kept. A column that draws nothing (no cross-section rules for it) is left
out. - It picks the largest scale at which every section fits, puts the vertical sections beside the key level with
its top and the horizontal sections under it level with its left edge, and saves the pages. - When the sections do not fit on one page, new pages are made automatically for the rest. A section too
big for a page even at 1:10 is left out and named in the message. - Pressing Auto again replaces only the pages Auto made (and their cuts); pages you made yourself, and their
cuts, stay. An Auto page you added one of your own cuts to counts as yours and stays too. If Auto finds nothing
to draw, nothing changes. At most 26 automatic cuts (one round of letters). - Auto recalculates the design first, exactly like the Recalculate button.
- With the company preference Cross-section sheets: Auto on opening (
auto_xsections) on,
Auto runs by itself every time the tab opens, with no click and no question, and shows its usual
message. It is skipped while a page has unsaved changes. Moving the sections on an Auto page does not make the
page yours, so it is made again the next time the tab opens.
Printing
The report Cross-section sheets is on the Order documents panel. It prints one page per saved
sheet, for every item of the order: the drawing area exactly where the preferences put it, inside the
border, with the title block (company, customer PO, order and item, description, scale, sheet n of m,
dates, page).
- Unsaved page edits are lost when you save or cancel the item. Only switching tabs asks first.
- Opening a page whose cut was removed (or whose design changed) drops that detail and says so; save
the page again to keep it that way. - Sheets made before 2026-10-13 open converted (one detail per cut); save them again to store the new
layout. - Sheets follow the item into the saved order (and back into the cart when the order is opened for
editing); deleting the line item deletes its sheets. Sections of deleted items do not print. - A design without a sash gives no sections on the 7100, because its section rules sit at the sash
level: its detail shows only the caption. - An X-section image part needs svg_image and image_scale set, or it does not draw to scale.
