How Can We Help?
When the aluminium market price moves, every profile’s cost has to change with it. Rather
than re-typing each part, Stock Management carries a Cost per [LB / KG]
field with a Go button: enter the current price per unit weight, and the profiles in
your current filter are re-costed in one action.
What Go does
For each part it computes:
new cost = the part's weight × the rate you entered
It applies to the parts currently in your filter, and within those, only to parts
whose type is Profile. Filter first, then run it — the filter is the scope.
It writes cost, not price
This sets the part’s cost only. Any price derived from that cost continues through
the existing markup and pricing path exactly as it does for a cost you type in by hand. Nothing
about how the part is priced changes.
The preview is what counts — nothing is written until you press Apply
Go does not change anything. It opens a preview listing every part it looked at, with its
weight, its current cost and the cost it would be given, plus a count such as
“18 to update, 4 skipped”. Cancel writes nothing at all. Only Apply
commits, and it commits exactly the rows the preview showed you.
Skipped parts are listed too, with the reason
A part that will not be written still appears in the preview, greyed, with why. This is
deliberate — a skip must never be mistaken for an update. The reasons are:
- no weight — the part has no weight in the unit you chose, so no cost can be worked out.
- cost matrix — the part’s cost comes from a cost matrix, so writing its cost field
would change a number nothing reads, and the quoted cost would not move. - cost price — the part has cost-price rows, which take precedence over the cost field, for the same reason.
- not a profile — the part is in your filter but is not a Profile part.
- part not found — the row’s part could not be loaded.
LB versus KG
The unit picks which weight is multiplied, it does not convert anything:
- Cost per LB multiplies the part’s imperial weight.
- Cost per KG multiplies the part’s metric weight.
A part that carries only the other system’s weight is skipped as “no weight” rather
than converted. A silently converted cost would look perfectly plausible and be wrong, so the
part is left alone for you to deal with directly.
Every run is recorded
Each Apply is logged with who ran it, when, the rate, which unit, how many parts were
updated and how many skipped, and the filter that was in force, together with the previous
cost of every part it changed. A run can therefore be explained months later, and because the
old costs are kept, a run remains reversible.
Two things worth knowing before you run it
- A profile with no stock record will not be re-costed. The Stock Management list is
built from stock records, so a purchased-but-not-stocked profile never appears in a filter and
is never picked up. Tick Show all parts (incl. non-stocked) first to bring those into
the list. - The control is only available to users who may change stock costs — the same right
that governs the Cost field on the Stock Record screen.
