A hardware prep (handle, multi-point lock, strike, keeper, hinge) is a shape op (Rule Type 143
Add Op Hardware Etc.) on a sash stile or a frame jamb, at a height. Tie it to the hardware option with a
test, and send it to one leaf with level code 201 / 202 or a Sash/Leaf No test. General rules:
How machining rules work.

Example E: multi-point handle / lock prep in a door sash (series 3501)

Sub-routine series 402 “01.TOR-A.HNDLFAB”, rules 4–12, called from series 269 “3501”
rule 230 (level Sash Leaf). Position Right. Tests on every rule: opening type is one of the door openings
(39, 46, 56); option “ACTIVE HANDLE TYPE” = TOR-A Multi point; Sash/Leaf No = 1; option “TOR-A
HANDLE POSITION” = 42.25″.

Rule Rule Type Value Meaning
4 143 Add Op Hardware Etc. Description: SD2TO_R LH 42.25 start the op
5 158 Set Op on Level=? Value 1 = 2 the sash
6 153 Set Op if Side? Value 1 = 4 its right stile
7 298 Set Op Feed Direction Description = 2 counter-clockwise feed
9 154 Set Op If Part Ref1 Description = 3501S 3501 sash profiles only
10 144 Set Op Pattern No. Description = SD2TO_R right-hand lock program
12 148 Set Op posX Description = L-42.28125+0.03125 handle height

In plain English: To rout the multi-point handle and lock prep in a 3501 door sash, the rule runs
SD2TO_R on the right stile of leaf 1 (3501S profiles only), at the handle height measured from the
bottom (L-42.28…, because a right stile is counted from the top down), when the door has the TOR-A
multi-point handle at the 42.25″ position.

Rules 24–31 are the mirror for a handle on the left stile: side 3, pattern
SD2TO_L, X = 42.28125-0.09375 (a left stile is counted from the bottom up, so no
L-).

Example F: strike prep on the frame jamb (series 8500)

Series 155 “8500 Frame”, rules 514–570: eight “Dual point strike” blocks, level
Frame, side 3 or 4, Reference 8500F, pattern DSTRIKE. Each block is
for one height band, with X = (H/2)-0.0625, H/2, 38, L-38,
46 or L-46.0625. Tests: a Height range (e.g. 0–60″, over 60–76″),
the door opening type, and option “8500 HANDLE TYPE” = D Handle.

In plain English: To prep the strike on the lock jamb at a fixed height, the rule runs DSTRIKE
on the frame’s lock-side jamb at 38″ (or L-38 on the other jamb), when the door is
60–76″ tall and has the D handle. On shorter doors another block puts it at mid-height
(H/2).

Build your own (hinge holes the same way)

  1. Level Sash Leaf for stile preps or Frame for jamb preps; Position = the side (Left / Right).
  2. Set Op on Level=?: 2 any sash, 201 / 202 only leaf 1 / leaf 2,
1 frame. Set Op if Side?: 3 left, 4 right.
  3. Reference, pattern, and posX: a fixed height (38), a height from the far end
(L-38) or a share of the size (H/2). For several hinges, one block per hinge
    (6, H/2, L-6) or a repeat row.
  4. Optional: Set Op Feed Direction (1 clockwise, 2 counter-clockwise),
Set Hrd Op Image (Value 1 = a part whose picture prints on the work order), tool and machine.
  5. Tests on every rule: the hardware option, the opening type (hand), height bands, leaf number.
Not confirmed“Left stile from the bottom, right stile from the
top” was read from the code and fits Example E (both preps land at the same height), but feed direction can
also change it and it was not checked against a printed cut list. Measure your first prep.
Doors next to sidelitesSince 2026-07-01 a shape op on a vertical
side lands on the coupler that the frame’s left or right side points to, so a door flanked by sidelites gets its
right-side prep on the right coupler.
