Create and change sales tax codes in OJ Setup → Product Setup → Tax Codes.
Open How tax codes work at the top of the screen for a short explanation. How codes are chosen for a
customer and how invoice tax is worked out is in Tax codes.

What, where, who, when, why

What The create/edit screen for sales tax codes: rate, region, and
whether shipping and installation are taxable.
Where OJ Setup → Product Setup → Tax Codes.
Who Accounting — tax rates are a compliance matter, not a
sales one.
When At setup for every jurisdiction you sell into, and whenever a
rate changes (typically at a government rate change, with an effective date).
Why it matters The customer’s tax code decides the rate applied to
every invoice line — and the shipping/installation taxable flags decide whether
those charges join the taxable base. Wrong here means remitting the wrong amount.

Working with the screen

  1. Click New to add a code, or select one and click Edit; then Save or Cancel.
  2. A code still used by customers, orders, order lines, credit or debit notes or invoices cannot be
    deleted
; the message lists the counts.
  3. Surcharge codes are not listed and cannot be changed here.
Field What it does
Description, Abbrev The name in the Tax 1 / 2 / 3 combos and the short name shown on the order.
Rate % The tax rate as a percentage (5 = 5%).
Sequence Which customer slot the code fills: 1 = Tax 1, 2 = Tax 2, 3 = Tax 3.
Country, State, County, City, ZIP The area the code
applies to. The country must match the ship-to address; the others must match it or be Any. A rate
of 0 with state Any makes an exempt code.
Job type The job type the code is meant for (Any = all). Only the ship-to window of
the order header lists codes by job type; the customer form lists the codes of every job type.
Tax base, Tax shipping, Tax installation Which amounts the code taxes:
product prices of taxable lines, shipping and installation charges.
Max taxable value When above 0, the taxable amount is capped at this value.
Editable on orders Shows an edit icon next to the tax on the order as a hint that
its rate may be changed there.
When a change takes effectCustomers and orders keep the
codes they already carry; a new rate is used wherever those codes are read from then on. Settings with no
effect in the current version (valid from / to, compound, tax account) are not shown and keep their values.
